ADAPT

Seniors face a unique set of challenges as they age, and adapting a home to meet their needs is an important step in helping them to live comfortably. Fortunately, there are a variety of ways to make modifications that can make a home more senior-friendly. Here are some tips for adapting a home to accommodate the needs of seniors:

  • Make sure that your home is safe. Start by removing tripping hazards, such as throw rugs, from the floor. Install grab bars in the bathroom, and consider adding handrails along staircases. Make sure all electrical outlets are covered, and replace any broken or loose stairs or railings.

  • Improve visibility. Install brighter lighting throughout the home and consider having night lights in hallways and bedrooms. Place mirrors in spots where visibility is limited, such as near corners, and install motion sensor lights outside.

  • Increase accessibility. Lower the height of counters and cabinets and install lever handles on doors and faucets. Consider changing the layout of the home to create wider pathways and to eliminate steps.

  • Enhance comfort. Add cushions to chairs and non-slip mats to floors. Install adjustable beds, and consider purchasing a lift chair or an adjustable recliner. Make sure that the home is kept warm and comfortable with adequate heating and cooling.

By taking the time to make these modifications, you can help seniors to remain independent and comfortable in their home (also known as aging-in-place) for as long as possible. This provides security and safety for them, while also providing peace of mind for you and other loved ones.
